20th Annual Iron Mountain Camp: Celebrating Two Decades of Training and Tradition

The Counterpoint Tactical System (CTS) celebrated a significant milestone this October with the 20th Annual Iron Mountain Camp, bringing together martial artists from across the country for four days of training, technical development, and camaraderie in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina.

Held October 1st through the 4th at the Laurel Ridge Retreat & Conference Center, this year’s camp marked twenty years of an event that has become an important tradition within the CTS community.

Under the leadership of Grandmaster Zach Whitson, Iron Mountain Camp has continued to serve as an opportunity for practitioners of different ranks and experience levels to deepen their understanding of the martial arts, exchange knowledge, and strengthen the relationships that connect the CTS family.

Twenty Years. One System. One Family.

The theme of this year’s camp reflected the continued evolution and integration of the Counterpoint Tactical System.

Throughout the weekend, participants explored the relationships between these disciplines, examining how striking, defensive movement, positional control, joint manipulation, and takedowns can operate together within a unified approach to martial arts.

Additional instruction in Taiji Chuan and Bagua Zhang provided opportunities to explore principles of movement, structure, balance, and body mechanics.

Rather than treating these arts as isolated subjects, the weekend emphasized their shared principles and how each contributes to a more comprehensive understanding of the system.

A Weekend of Technical Instruction

Iron Mountain Camp has long been described by Grandmaster Whitson as an “Instructor’s Training Camp,” and this year’s event continued that tradition.

In addition to Grandmaster Whitson’s instruction, eight instructors contributed their knowledge and experience throughout the weekend, presenting material across multiple areas of the CTS curriculum.

This year’s additional instructors included:

  • Senior Instructor Clint Eversole
  • Senior Instructor Preston Macready
  • Professor Bryan Vinik
  • Professor Thomas Slack
  • Professor David Curet
  • Professor Kevin Wagner
  • Professor Joel Daughtery
  • Professor Josh Ryer

Each instructor brought their own experience, perspective, and technical understanding to the training floor, providing participants with opportunities to explore different aspects of the Counterpoint Tactical System.

The variety of instruction reinforced one of the defining characteristics of Iron Mountain Camp: the opportunity to learn from experienced practitioners who bring different perspectives to a common system.

This year’s event also marked a milestone for Senior Instructor Clint Eversole of Columbus Tactical, who taught at Iron Mountain Camp for the first time.

Recognizing Achievement and Dedication

In addition to the training, the 20th anniversary provided an opportunity to recognize several individuals whose accomplishments and continued participation reflect the strength of the CTS community.

Shihan John Busto successfully tested for and earned his Second Degree Black Belt in the Counterpoint Tactical System during the weekend. His promotion represented another important achievement in his continued martial arts development.

The camp also recognized Joel, David, and Josh for attending all twenty Iron Mountain Camps. Their participation in every camp since the event’s inception represents a remarkable commitment to the tradition and the community that has developed around it.

Another meaningful part of the weekend was the return of Mr. Bill Graves, whose presence helped make the anniversary celebration especially memorable.

These recognitions highlighted the importance of both individual achievement and long-term dedication to the martial arts.

The Tradition Continues

Over the past twenty years, Iron Mountain Camp has grown into much more than an annual training event. It provides an environment where instructors and students can share their experiences, revisit fundamental principles, explore advanced concepts, and continue developing their skills.

While the curriculum continues to evolve, the purpose of the camp remains consistent: providing quality instruction while maintaining the relationships and standards that define the Counterpoint Tactical System.

The mountain setting, focused training environment, and shared commitment to improvement have helped make Iron Mountain Camp a lasting tradition for those who attend.

Looking Ahead

The successful completion of the 20th Annual Iron Mountain Camp represents an important chapter in the history of the Counterpoint Tactical System.

We extend our appreciation to Master Z and Mrs. Dian for their continued work organizing the event, to the instructors who shared their knowledge, and to everyone who participated in this milestone weekend.

Twenty years of Iron Mountain Camp reflect the dedication of countless martial artists who have contributed to its success.

As we look toward the future, the mission remains the same: continued training, technical growth, and the preservation and development of the Counterpoint Tactical System.
