Founded in 2000, Ryer Academy has grown from a Pitt student club into one of Pittsburgh’s leading martial arts schools. Rooted in Shadyside since 2004, we’re proud to offer practical, modern training that builds confidence, focus, and self-defense skills for students of all ages.
Who Teaches At Ryer Martial Arts Academy?
Ryer Martial Arts Academy is led by Josh Ryer, the academy’s founder and head instructor. Josh has over 25 years of teaching experience and is passionate about helping students of all ages grow through martial arts.
He holds the following ranks:
- 6th Degree Black Belt in Counterpoint Tactical System
- 5th Degree Black Belt in Cacoy Canete Doce Pares
- 4th Degree Black Belt in Kenpo Karate
- Purple Belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
Since opening the academy in 2004, Josh has worked with thousands of students—young kids, teens, and adults—focusing not just on techniques, but on personal growth and lifelong learning. His goal is to create a welcoming, supportive space where every student can thrive.
What Martial Art Do You Teach?
At Ryer Martial Arts Academy, we teach Master Zach Whitson’s Counterpoint Tactical System — a modern, principle-based martial art focused on practical self-defense.
For children, the curriculum is organized into clear, age-appropriate categories that help students build both verbal and physical self-defense skills. As they grow, they transition into more advanced youth and teen programs.
For adults, the system includes progressive training in:
- Striking
- Stand-up grappling
- Ground defense
- Weapons training
As you advance, you’ll gain not only real-world survival skills but also a deep, lasting sense of confidence — one that carries into every part of life.
